The Grooming and Handling Guide is your essential companion to keeping your dog not only the best-looking, but also the healthiest dog on the block. The guidance in this ebook will help you to build your dog’s confidence and your skills on the grooming table. While veterinary care, obedience training, and socialization are critical in those first few months together, grooming and handling should not be overlooked. Building good grooming habits early helps lay a strong foundation for a lifetime of health and comfort.
Your groomer is your partner in maintaining your dog’s outer health, but they can’t do it all alone. Between professional sessions, you play a critical role. Daily brushing, cleaning teeth every other day, and keeping up with nail trims and ear cleaning once a week will go a long way.

Teaching your dog a solid “place” command gives them a designated home base during grooming sessions. This not only provides them with a mental activity to focus on, but it also helps them feel secure. Instead of wondering what you expect of them, they’ll know exactly where to be, making grooming feel like a cooperative, team activity. The place command is easy to teach, and can even be useful outside of the groom room!
Regular grooming of your dog’s coat, nails, ears, and teeth is key to maintaining their overall well-being. Neglecting these routines can lead to skin issues, dental problems, and increased anxiety when being handled. Working on these areas from the start ensures that your dog is more relaxed and comfortable throughout their life. This guide will help you determine the appropriate routine for your dog, and instructs you step-by-step.
Your groomer is your partner in maintaining your dog’s outer health, but they can’t do it all alone. Between professional sessions, you play a critical role. Daily brushing, cleaning teeth every other day, and keeping up with nail trims and ear cleaning once a week will go a long way. With this routine, your dog should only need a bath every three weeks or so, helping to keep their coat and skin in the best possible condition. Plus, the work you do at home builds confidence for better behavior and better results at the groomer.
This guide also introduces you to muzzle conditioning. Even with all the right training and early intervention, there may be times when a muzzle is necessary—for everyone’s safety. Training your dog to wear a muzzle in low-stress situations ensures that they’ll be comfortable with it if the need ever arises, whether at the vet or during a grooming appointment.

Class will be held at Barks and Rec!
With the help of a dedicated trainer, you and your dog learn basic commands while getting rid of unwanted behaviors like jumping, leash-pulling, and running through open doors. During this five-week program, you’ll meet weekly with your trainer and work directly with your dog in between lessons to help them build muscle memory via homework assignments and reinforce new skills directly in your home environment.
We recommend this program for any dog at least 20 weeks of age who has not had prior obedience training. The small group lesson program is also ideal for any dog owner who is looking to build a better bond with their dog and form better insights into their dog’s motivations and thought processes. Finally, this program is ideal for the dog owner who has the time and energy to commit to participating in the daily homework assignments required to progress your dog through the curriculum.
At the end of the program, your dog will have useful and reliable off-leash obedience skills under distraction, for a duration of time, and at a distance from their handler. You’ll have an understanding of how to reinforce your dog’s training for life.
