What's in the Rescue and Adoption Foundations Guide?

Welcome to your Rescue and Adoption Guide – your trusted companion as you embark on this heartwarming journey of giving a deserving dog a fresh start in a loving home!

Congratulations on the newest member of your family! Opening your heart and home to a rescue dog is a beautiful act of kindness, and you’re about to experience a bond like no other. Whether you’re bringing home a shy soul who’s seen the world or a high-energy, lovable goofball, get ready for a journey full of love, learning, and transformation.

Adopting a rescue dog comes with its own unique set of rewards and challenges. It’s important to remember that while your home is new to your dog, you are also new to them. They may be adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings, sounds, and routines. That’s where the “Rule of 3” comes into play—a concept that perfectly illustrates the phases of adjustment many rescue dogs go through in their new homes:

•   3 days to decompress and begin to feel less overwhelmed by their new environment.

•   3 weeks to start settling in, showing more of their personality, and learning the house rules.

•   3 months to fully trust and feel at home with their new family.

During this time, your dog may need extra patience, compassion, and structure as they adjust to their new life. In this guide, we’ll walk you through every step of this transition, from the first day home to those critical weeks and months ahead. You’ll find helpful advice on everything from establishing a routine, building trust, and setting boundaries to addressing potty habits and creating a solid foundation for a happy, well-adjusted life together.

Puppy Training

Our Puppy Foundations program is a group training program that aims to help your family set your puppy up for lifelong success.

Sessions are held in Grandview on Wednesday evenings from 5:00-6:00pm.

With the help of a dedicated trainer, you and your puppy will learn to safely socialize and manage unwanted puppy behavior. During this four-week program, you’ll meet weekly with your trainer to discuss topics such as crate training, housebreaking, chewing, biting and other puppy behaviors. You’ll also learn how to start treat training with your dog to establish a healthy and happy bond from the start.

Having the dog of your dreams often means early intervention and mindful work at the puppy stage. Canine Academy is excited to help you step towards the canine companion of your dreams through early education for this exciting time!

This class is a perfect fit for any puppy between 10 weeks and 20 weeks old. Puppies are required to have at least one series of DHLPP vaccine.

Our Puppy Foundations classes each introduce a topic for training and discussion. The classes can be attended in any order. Each class will give an opportunity for your puppy to socialize safely.

Basic Obedience Group Training

Our small group class training aims to make you an expert dog handler.

Alongside fellow dog owners, you and your pup will learn and practice basic obedience commands to get rid of unwanted behaviors like jumping, leash-pulling and running through open doors.

Class will be held at Barks and Rec!

With the help of a dedicated trainer, you and your dog learn basic commands while getting rid of unwanted behaviors like jumping, leash-pulling, and running through open doors. During this five-week program, you’ll meet weekly with your trainer and work directly with your dog in between lessons to help them build muscle memory via homework assignments and reinforce new skills directly in your home environment.

We recommend this program for any dog at least 20 weeks of age who has not had prior obedience training. The small group lesson program is also ideal for any dog owner who is looking to build a better bond with their dog and form better insights into their dog’s motivations and thought processes.  Finally, this program is ideal for the dog owner who has the time and energy to commit to participating in the daily homework assignments required to progress your dog through the curriculum.

At the end of the program, your dog will have useful and reliable off-leash obedience skills under distraction, for a duration of time, and at a distance from their handler. You’ll have an understanding of how to reinforce your dog’s training for life.

  • 5 small group training sessions with a dedicated trainer
  • 1 follow-up phone call, scheduled ~90 days after graduation
  • E-collar and 15 ft. leash

Barks & Rec customers can purchase the group class obedience package for $695.
